A Busted Day Saved - 09/03/25
I’m at the scenic overlook south of Maiden Rock on Wisconsin Highway 35. It’s cool—60° and windy, partly cloudy. It will probably be clearing shortly, but right now, some interesting convective cumulus clouds are moving over. Behind them: to the west, clear, to the north, maybe one last rain squall. I’m sitting in the rear of my CRV, looking west into the late afternoon sun (sunset is in 1.5 hours. A wide band of reflected light on Lake Pepin stretches between the sun and where I sit. I’m shooting examples of backlighting; shooting at the sun with intervening clouds, a situation that usually produces crepuscular rays.
What/where could be better? What a great way to shoot! Sitting watching the weather roll by, picking up my camera when inspired. Definitely a lazy mode of photography. No hiking, no bugs, no heat. Did I mention that I’m also drinking beer? Two, 12 oz. bottles of New Glarus Staghorn Octoberfest beer.
A few vultures are soaring up high. The occasional cry of a gull. I just saw a big V of geese flying very high above the bluffs. Maybe too high to show up in a photo, but I nevertheless took two. [One shows the flock very distinctly.]
The sound of the wind and waves. The feel of the cool wind on my cheek.
