Making the Same Old Mistake

It’s a challenge to photograph a butterfly in flight. I make it harder by repeatedly making the same mistake. I don’t use a fast enough shutter speed to capture movement as well as I would like. I’ve made the same mistake too often—I should know better.

Anyway, I shot this series of a monarch butterfly at 1/640 second—too slow. I should have used 1/1000 or maybe even 1/1600. One must use a high ISO to shoot at such fast shutter speeds in less-than-ideal light. A few years ago, using such high ISOs resulted in images with too much noise. The latest software, such as Lightroom, makes it easy to remove excessive noise from high-ISO images.

So, I have no excuse for still making the same mistake of not using a fast enough shutter speed.

On second (or third) thought; maybe a bit of blur adds a sense of motion to the image.
