Red Meadowhawk
The Sympetrum genus of dragonflies are commonly called meadowhawks, a great name for insects that are “fearsome and efficient predators.” Larger dragonflies “have even been known to take down a hummingbird.”* They almost always hunt on the wing. The largest North American dragonfly is the Giant Darner (Anax walsingham), which has a wingspan of up to five inches and a body length of up to four inches. The largest in the North Woods is probably the Swamp Darner (Epiaeschna heros), which can reach up to 3.5 inches in length. A ruby-throated hummingbird is about .11 ounces and 3 to 3.75 inches long.
Below are three shots of red meadowhawks, one of a halloween pennant, and one of a green species I was unable to identify, but I think is a type of snaketail (Ophiogomphus).
