Birds, Bugs, Bass, and a Woodpecker
Last week was a good week for butterflies, dragonflies, and an angry grackle. And, for the first time, I photographed largemouth bass on spawning beds and a pileated woodpecker.
I’ve been concentrating on shooting butterflies. On two occasions, a bug fortuitously flew into the picture. I had no idea that I’d captured something other than a butterfly until I got home and looked at the images on my computer screen.
Here, a bee, a blurry blob, approaches the monarch butterfly from the lower right. Then it bungles into the monarch and flies away. The monarch is left in peace.
This time, the butterfly is a ‘karner’ melissa blue and the bug is—I think—a fly. The flower is butterfly weed or orange milkweed.
This common grackle was angry. It didn’t want me in its territory and did its best to chase me out.
