American Lotus

I hiked, for the first time, the Sand Point Trail in Minnesota’s Frontenac State Park. Sand Point juts into the Mississippi River downriver from Red Wing. It is sandy, and I wore myself out walking in the soft, deep beach sand.

The point was the downstream shore of a broad, shallow bay. The bay was filled with what I thought were water lilies. The lilies were a bit odd, so when I got home, I checked my wildflower guidebook. Turns out they weren’t water lilies; they were American Lotus. The American Lotus is found in the Mississippi as far north as Minnesota. In addition to the photos of lotus plants, I’ve included a photo of Sand Point Trail.
