A Happy Day Is Coming

Rabo de Nube Album Cover

I was perked up this morning by a song. I needed perking up after a night when my black dog of insomnia was vicious. The song is “El dia feliz que está llegando” written by the Cuban songwriter and singer Silvio Rodríguez who was named one of the two best Cuban composers of the 20th Century. The first version of the song I heard today is by The Gustav Lundgren Trio, a Swedish group. That’s the version that was my morning pick-me-up.

The song’s title translates as A Happy Day Is Coming. Lundgren’s edition is instrumental. Listen to Rodriquez’s version to hear the lyrics. Here is a translation of the first verse.

A happy day is coming

like a ship after months

An April day is arriving

at the end of November

Appropriate given that we are having April days at the end of December.

Rodriguez’s version is from his album Rabo de Nube which translates as waterspout. That reminded me of another great song by a Cuban guitarist about a cyclone, “El trio y el ciclón,” by my favorite guitarist Eliades Ochoa.

And thinking of Ochoa reminds me of another of his songs that has an encouraging message, “Estoy Como Nunca” which translaties as I am better than ever.
