After the Burn
I visited two areas last week where there were controlled burns. At Crex Meadows State Wildlife Area, burning preserves the prairie and wetland ecosystems. They burn about 4,000 acres a year.
The burning at Maiden Rock Bluff State Natural Area is done to preserve the dry prairies atop the bluffs.
The burns are unsightly until new, lush greenery soon erupts.
