Boats

Sailing On Lake Pepin

I’ve shot no photos for weeks as I struggle with a winter cold; not serious, but it keeps me inactive and indoors. So I have to recirculate old photos from my library; some of which I’ve posted before. This week my photos are of boats. The first one I shot ten years ago; the most recent this year.

Lately, as I write blog posts, I find myself veering off course as I’m reminded of subjects other than the subject of the post. Thinking about boats put me in mind of the song “La Mer,” or as it is known in English, “Somewhere Beyond the Sea.” I wrote more about “La Mer” below the photo gallery.

“La Mer” was written by French composer Charles Trenet who recorded it in 1946. It was a hit and has since become a jazz and popular standard. It’s been recorded many times by many artists; choreographed into a ballet, “Infernal Galop”; used in many movies, for example, “Finding Nemo;” featured in video games like “BioShock;” and featured on TV and in advertising.

I have recordings, none in English, by Charles Trenet, Julio Iglesias, Jerry Caringni, Luca Aquino, Chantal Cumberland, and Veronneau. The Veronneau version is my favorite because it includes some great whistling. Bobby Daren recorded an English version in 1959, the one I first heard and still remember. Bobby Williams did the version in “Finding Nemo.”

Most recently, I heard a fine version by Luca Aquino, an Italian, jazz trumpeter. Aquino started playing when he was 19 and was self-taught. He’s played around the world, won many awards, and collaborated with notable musicians. He recorded “La Mer” with a Norwegian rhythm section and vocals by a guest artist, Lucio Dalla, an Italian Singer.
