A Day At the Beach

Beach On the South Shore Of Lake Superior

No, I wasn’t basking on a tropical beach. I was on the south shore of Lake Superior in Northern Wisconsin. There are fine beaches on the south shore, but on a day last week, the wind was raging from the north; a cold wind. At one time I saw another photographer drive up, set up his tripod and camera on a jetty, and then give up after five minutes of fighting the wind. I lasted ten minutes, time enough to get shots of gulls soaring in the wind.

Somewhere up above my head, the skies were blue and cloudless, but I couldn’t see the blue because of the smoke from Canadian wildfires. Later in the afternoon I was able to shoot directly into the sun that was partially shielded by the smoke.

The water was brown; turgid with sand carried to the south shore by the waves driven by the northerly winds.
