White Flower Photography
Recently, during the cold weather, I’ve been photographing white flowers in my kitchen-table studio. I’m using a technique I learned about from Harold Davis and Robert Llewellyn. Their technique is more sophisticated and painstaking than mine; I have less patience and use a simpler technique. Placing the subject on a light box is the heart of the technique. The subject will be powerfully backlit, so I make sure it is also well lighted from above so it is not in shadow. Later, in Lightroom, I further lighten the subject.
Over the years, I’ve also shot white wild flowers outside. I’ve included one of those shots, a lance-leaved violet (I think). Finally, I added an image I built in Photoshop by layering a textured image over the flower and reducing the opacity of the textured image.
