An Icy Whirlpool

While walking on a causeway through a marsh, something moving caught my eye. Had to be an animal of some sort. When I had a less-obstructed view, I saw that it was something spinning like a top—not an animal. It looked like a big snowcone plastered together by the little whirlpool it was spinning in.

There was a bit of open water here, along the edge of the causeway. The water was a foot deep—no more. There was a slight, almost imperceptible slope down which meltwater was flowing on top of old ice that had sunk below the surface of the water. The water was flowing from all directions into a hole in the ice, forming a whirlpool. This was a natural phenomenon that I’d never seen before.

This is my first video, not a great video, but it clearly shows the whirlpool and spinning snowcone.

Below the video are a few photos that I took in March.
