Stillwater Prepares For the Flood

Stillwater Keeps the Public Away From Flood Preparations

Stillwater, Minnesota, my home, has been preparing since April 22nd for spring flooding on the St. Croix River. It looks like everything is ready and in place. There has not yet been much high water because the weather has been cool and the snow melt slow. That is set to change. There is still a lot of snow in the watershed upriver, and the temperatures by mid-week will be near 80° F.

The city has been very aggressive this year in keeping the public away from the river as you can see in some of the photos I’ve posted. They have not done this in the past, and I’ve been able to get right next to the river to photograph previous floods. I am going to try to figure out a way to do so this year; maybe one of the restaurants along the river will let me use their rooftop deck.

In addition to the photos of this year’s preparations, I’ve included a few of past floods.
