Swarming Hummingbirds
The ruby-throated hummingbirds were swarming along Pine Creek. Well, maybe not swarming, but more than I’ve ever seen in one place at the same time.
I was in a coulee in western Wisconsin. The coulee floor was flat, hemmed in by the hills along the Mississippi. The floor was mostly meadow, the creek meandering through on its way to the river. The creek near the spot I visited was only a yard wide. It was hemmed in by bushes of spotted touch-me-nots; the small, orange, iris-like wild flower. The hummingbirds were feeding on the tubular touch-me-nots. Very busy. There seemed to be a bird working every bush. Busy, busy, busy . . . It’s very hard to photograph hummingbirds. They move too fast, turn too fast, and flap their wings too fast. On most of the photos I shot, the birds are just a blur. I got lucky on a couple of shots; only two out of more than 250.
