A Tower Of Rocks
On Wisconsin Rustic Road 51, I saw an unusual rock formation; part of a cliff that rose from the edge of the dirt road. It was a tower formed from layers of sedimentary rock, probably sandstone or limestone. It was balanced precariously and will eventually topple. The shallow cave that surrounds it was formed when water eroded the rock layers around it, leaving it still standing. Each block in the tower is the remnant of a layer in the bedrock.
This is Rustic Route 51. The cliff is on the right side of the road.
